HYDERABAD: Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday said 28,000 buildings built illegally on city's storm water drains "will be bulldozed to prevent flooding during heavy rains."

The government, henceforth, will not allow even a single illegal construction to come up in the city, the CM said adding: "Flying squads for each of the 24 municipal circles, assisted by police, will be pressed into service to pull down unauthorized structures that are under construction at the moment."

"We are determined to demolish all buildings constructed illegally on encroached storm water drains across the city and blocking rain water flow to prevent flooding,"

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will give a Rs 10,000 cash reward to persons who provide information on unauthorized constructions. Chandrasekhar Rao was addressing a press conference after reviewing the rain situation in the state with ministers, district collectors and superintendents of police on Saturday evening.

Rao said the root cause of inundation of several colonies was encroachment of storm water drains (nalas) and Rs 11,000 crore was required for removal of these structures. He announced that while private persons would get compensation as per the Land Acquisition Act, the poor whose houses are to be demolished will be rehabilitated by allocating two-bed room houses.
