-Press release by Jan Sarokar (People's Agenda), dated 14th August, 2020

This is to invite you to participate in a Janta Parliament being organised by several civil society organisation networks and peoples’ movements from 16th August to 21st August from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The inauguration will happen on 16th August at 11:00 am. Justice AP Shah, Syeda Hameed, Jignesh Mevani and Soni Sori will be speaking at the inauguration.

The Budget Session of Parliament was curtailed due to Covid-19 and the sudden imposition of lockdown and since then Parliament has not been in session. The pandemic and the lockdown have fundamentally altered people's lives and almost no sector or section of society has been left unaffected. World over, many countries have moved to virtual and online sessions because, especially in a pandemic, Parliament cannot stop representing the people and keeping a check on the executive. But in India, several far-reaching and even controversial policy decisions taken by the government have escaped any kind of legislative scrutiny or representative accountability. Therefore, concerned citizens have decided to get together and convene a Janta Parliament to discuss urgent Covid related policy measures.

A background note and concept note have been attached to give more details about this event. Your presence and participation will be a great support for this initiative.

All proceedings of the Janta Parliament can be seen live at jantaparliament.wordpress.com. However, if one watches the live stream, then they will not be able to listen to the translations or vote on the resolutions. So, it will be better to join the Janta Parliament on Zoom, for which you will have to first register here:  bit.ly/jp2020registration
