NEW DELHI: The national capital territory of Delhi accounts for 1.53% of establishments and 2.34% of the total employment in the country. Of the total people employed by establishments in the city, 26,20,993 were male while 3,63,857 were females. With women forming only 12.19% of the city's workforce, Delhi is way behind the national average of 25.56%. For every woman employed in an establishment, there are seven men that are hired.

These details were revealed by the sixth economic census report on Delhi-2013, released by the directorate of economics and statistics of Delhi government on Friday.

The report classifies an establishment as a unit that is "situated in a single location in which predominantly one kind of economic activity is carried out such that at least a part of the goods and/or services produced by the unit goes for sale". All agricultural and non-agricultural activities, excluding crop production, plantation, public administration, defense and compulsory social security services activities were considered for the survey.

As per the report, there were 8,93,177 establishments operating in Delhi in 2013. Out of these, 12,673 or 1.42% were in rural areas while 8,80,504 or 98.58% were located in urban areas.

Of the total establishments, 23.11% operate outside the household without fixed structures, a shade better than the all-India average of 20.49%.

The central zone has the highest number of establishments in the city, housing 17.16% of the total establishments. Consequently, it also has the highest employment rate. West Delhi is second but way behind with 11.93% of the total establishments. The least numbers can be found in southwest and New Delhi zones which have 4.7% and 4.31% establishments, respectively.

Only 3.32% or 29,680 of the establishments employed eight or more people, making Delhi a city of relatively small establishments. The city has an average employee rate of 3.34 per establishment against the all-India average of 2.18 workers per enterprise. In rural Delhi, the average number of persons employed by an enterprise was 2.19 while in the urban areas, an average of 3.36 persons were employed by each enterprise.

The city's average employment size is also better, though marginally, than the average employment size of neighbouring states. Where Haryana enterprises employed an average of 2.76 persons, Himachal Pradesh had a rate of 2.32 per enterprise, Punjab 2.36 persons, Uttar Pradesh 2.05 persons and Rajasthan 2.12 persons per establishment.

The total number of people found working in rural establishments was 27,812 while in the urban areas, the number was a massive 29,57,038, accounting for 99.07% of the total number of persons found working in an establishment in the national capital.
