Kochi: Drought and high temperatures in the plantation regions of Kerala are likely to cause irreparable damage to the crops. Association of Planters of Kerala reports that the plantation sector is facing one of the worst drought conditions in last 115 years and crop production had reduced by 30% in tea, 14% in rubber, 60% in cardamom and 40% in coffee.

Most of the agri-commodities are highly monsoon sensitive with lesser moisture and temperature affecting the yield.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) centre in Thiruvananthapuram has reported that the state was short by 34% in the south–west monsoon rains which brings maximum moisture to the state. As against the normal rainfall of 2,039.7 mm for the period, the state received 1,352.3 mm of rain in 2016.

All the fourteen districts of the state were seen deficit in rainfall in the current season with Idduki short by 31% and Wayanad by a massive 59%. The following north-east monsoon was also seen short by 62% and categorised as ‘large deficient’ by the IMD.

The seasonal rainfall seen during the first few months of 2017 is also lower by 33% for the period of January 1, 2017 to February 22.

Lesser or no rains in Wayanad and Idukki districts have led to high daytime temperature and rapid decline in the water table.

“The erratic rainfall patterns of monsoons and high day time temperature during summer have detrimentally affected all the plantation crops. Different research institutes have predicted that, the climate change may bring down the production and productivity of the plantations. The crop production has become more seasonal in nature,” Thomas Jacob, chairman of APK said.
