<p>India’s trade deficit—the difference between the value of its imports and exports—rose to a record $25.6 billion this June (about Rs 2 lakh crore), almost three times the figure for the same month last year ($9.61 billion, or about Rs 76,000 crore). The spike was primarily driven by the import cost of petroleum, coal and gold and slower exports. Data released by the Centre on July 4 showed India’s merchandise exports in June rose 16.8 per cent year-on-year to $37.9 billion (Rs 3 lakh crore), slower than the 20.5 per cent registered in May. Imports, however, jumped 51 per cent to $63.58 billion (Rs 5 lakh crore). India’s trade deficit during the first three months of this fiscal year widened to $70.25 billion (Rs 5.5 lakh crore) from $31.42 billion (Rs 2.5 lakh crore) in the year-ago period. A country’s trade deficit is almost always the largest component of its current account deficit (CAD), which includes other figures, such as international investment.</p>
<p>The primary reason for the widening of the trade deficit was the higher import value of crude and petroleum products, coal, coke and electronic goods, among others. The total value of petroleum products and crude imported in June this year stood at $20.73 billion (Rs 1.6 lakh crore) compared to $10.67 billion (Rs 84,000 crore) in June 2021. Coal and coke imports this June stood at $6.41 billion (Rs 50,000 crore) compared to $1.87 billion (Rs 15,000 crore) in June 2021. This was followed by electronic goods ($5.83 billion/ Rs 46,000 crore compared with $4.6 billion/ Rs 36,000 crore a year ago), machinery ($3.62 billion/ Rs 28,500 crore compared with $3.18 billion/ Rs 25,000 crore a year ago) and chemicals ($3.35 billion/ Rs 26,500 crore compared with $2.45 billion/ Rs 19,300 crore in June 2021).</p>
