An all-woman team of reporters finds a massive online readership in the Bundelkhand region of northern India

A homemade drone is shot down because the police think it belongs to the IS. A temple is built for a dacoit and his wife. A group of journalists are stalked for months until their story goes viral on the internet, after which a sleepy police station immediately swings into action. Reporting is serious business in Bundelkhand, and the all-woman team of Khabar Lahariya is now showing the world just how they bring out a print and digital newspaper in a deeply patriarchal society.

The online edition carries news reports in Awadhi, Bajjika, Bundeli, Bhojpuri and English.

Disha Mullick, senior editor at Khabar Lahariya , who was in the city says that initially there was resistance to the idea of going online.

"I work with a group who started this paper around 17 years ago, and they say nothing has changed in Bundelkhand. But then we realised that there is a large readership of younger women from the region using the internet, and they don't have much content relevant to them to consume," she said at a panel discussion during City Scripts, a festival on urban writings, held at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements on Saturday.

"We do very local reporting with a very local audience. One of our popular stories was about a man who made a drone, which was shot down by the police, who think he’s related to the IS. At the end of the video, he says, ‘ agar koi company mujhe job dena chahe, mai ready hun ’," Ms. Mullick said.

Later, speaking to The Hindu , she explained her role at the organisation: I train our reporters on how to find stories, ask the right questions, and so on. They choose what stories they do.

The publication has partnered with The Ladies Finger to get some of its content translated and published in English.

“We are focusing on online distribution of our stories, mostly through Facebook and WhatsApp," she adds.

Khabar Lahariya has a team of 30 reporters on the field and a dozen employees in New Delhi, who focus on publishing and editing.

The print edition is published in six local languages. The newspaper has given its staff a voice of their own.
