42 families from Birpur village of Satna district in northern Madhya Pradesh are on a protest since the beginning of the month, to draw attention to the siphoning of their PDS foodgrain. Additionally, through an online petition put by a local activist group, the families are demanding that K.K. Khare, Satna’s District Collector use his powers to crack down on the months-long corruption and resume their supply of ration entitlements. For seeing the petition, please click here.

According to a local activist group the Bagelkhand Adivasi Kissan Mazdoor Mukti Morcha, the families, belonging to Dalit and Adivasi communities got their ration cards in 2007, and had been receiving grain till 2010, after which corruption kicked in. Rajkumar, a representative of the Morcha said the local ration shop owner was responsible for the problem by siphoning off the families share of subsidized rations and selling it in the open market for a higher price. When families complained, they were ridiculed by the shop owner.

Maina, a resident of Birpur called up the CGNet Swara citizens journalism platform to sing of the families’ woes and inability to access affordable food: “We have been given the bureaucratic run-around, making endless rounds of the offices of the district administration to ask for our rightful share of PDS rations, but to no avail.” Check the link: http://www.cgnetswara.org/index.php?id=14339
