MP markets black chicken on mobile app

Bhopal:
Cock a doodle, er Google, do.

The Madhya Pradesh government has launched a mobile app, available on Google Play Store from Thursday, to market a rare chicken breed - the Kadaknath - whose delicious black meat is in high demand for its nutritious content and purported aphrodisiac and medicinal properties.

Through the Android app - MP Kadaknath - fowl meat and egg will be available anywhere in the country.

An average Kadaknath cock weighs 1.5kg and is priced at Rs 800 a kg.

According to minister of state for cooperatives Vishwas Sarang, who launched the app on Thursday evening, people will be able to place online orders for Kadaknath chicken from anywhere.

"Availability of Kadaknath chicken with the cooperative societies can also be seen on the app," he added.

The Kadaknath fowl is found primarily in the tribal belt of Jhabua and Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Sarang said that compared to "normal" chicken, the Kadaknath variety has 25 per pent more protein and iron and low fat and cholesterol levels.

According to the minister, Kadaknath meat and eggs can be bought from 21 cooperative societies.

Locally called Kalamasi, the fowl is also considered to be sacred and is offered as sacrifice to the Goddess after Diwali. Tribals uses Kadaknath blood to treat chronic diseases.

The Kadaknath - or the firm one - has a special place in tribal life in the Jhabua-Alirajpur belt. It is an essential dish at all celebrations.

Every groom is fed Kadaknath meat for over a fortnight as tribals believe that the variety has aphrodisiac properties.

The Kadaknath is closely linked to elections too. During the 2013 Assembly polls and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the veterinary department had slapped an informal ban on the sale of the Kadaknath as the meat had become a rage among visiting politicians and bureaucrats on poll duty.

Many politicians swear that after a tiring day there is nothing like having Kadaknath meat cooked in thick garlic-ginger gravy.

Assembly polls are scheduled to be held in Madhya Pradesh in 2019, as are the general elections.

Minister Sarang said he was trying to boost Kadaknath sale across the country with the help of the 21 cooperative societies.

The app also provides an online marketing platform to 430 members of these 21 societies located in Jhabua and Alirajpur.

Incidentally, the Kadaknath is a bone of contention between Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, with both vying for a GI tag for the breed.

Chhattisgarh used to be part of undivided Madhya Pradesh till 2000.

Now, both states have filed applications with the Geographical Indication Registry office in Chennai for the GI tag.

While Madhya Pradesh insists that the Kadaknath originated in Jhabua-Alirajpur, Chhattisgarh says the bird was reared in Dantewada district, over 1,000km from eastern Madhya Pradesh.

Veterinary experts in Bhopal said poultry farms to breed the Kadaknath were first set up in Jhabua in 1978.

Subsequently, Birbal Sahu, a senior Chhattisgarh scientist, transported over 1,000 Kadaknath chicks from Jhabua to the Bastar region.

Sahu handed over the chicks to women self-help groups in Kanker and Dantewada.

Today, while Madhya Pradesh produces about 2.5 lakh Kadaknath chicks a year, Chhattisgarh breeds almost double that number.
