BERHAMPUR (Odisha): Visually impaired Plus II students can look forward to Braille text books, as well as literary works in Odia, from the next academic year. The Red Cross Braille Press here — the state’s only Braille press, which has been supplying text books to schools for the past 33 years — will be able to print text books for Plus II students thanks to the installation of a modern computerised Braille machine.

State minister for social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities Ashok Chandra Panda inaugurated the machine on Thursday. “The modern machine has been procured from Germany at a cost of Rs 1.18 crore. With its help, the press will bring out the state government’s prescribed textbooks for the higher secondary courses soon,” the minister said. Several Odia books too could now be printed in Braille, he added.

The new machine can print around 50 to 60 error-free Braille pages per hour. “Moreover, graphs and diagrams in Braille can be drawn through it, which will be a boon for visual challenged persons,” Panda further said.

The existing infrastructure at the press does not have the capacity to print higher secondary text books. established in 1986 and computerized in 2013, the press currently supplies books to students of classes 1 to X.

Manager Prakash Narayan Rath said not just texts, rules and acts of the government were also printed in Braille here, as was a quarterly science magazine of Odisha Vigyan Academy called Vigyan Digant. The Braille calendar had also been printed here for the past seven years here, he said.
