Bhubaneswar: Your smartphone has one more job to do - spot and alert authorities with visual evidence of traffic violations.

From next month, one can click photographs of traffic violators on their mobile phone and send it to the authorities using a special app that the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Bhubaneswar-II, has decided to come up with.

The app will help residents here to directly report incidents of traffic violations to the RTO.

On December 3, the RTO had launched a programme announced cash rewards for those coming up with photographic evidence of traffic violations, such as people talking over phone while driving or parking vehicles in prohibited areas. The scheme was launched with the RTO paying Rs 50 for each photograph of traffic violations.

However, the decision to launch the app was taken when the authorities found that people were finding it difficult to take printouts of the photographs they clicked on their phones.

"As most people use smartphones to click photographs and find it difficult to take printouts, we decided to launch the app so that they could send us the snaps online," said a senior transport official.

"We have already fined a dozen of violators on the basis of photographs submitted by the residents. We are also receiving hundreds of calls everyday from people who want to send us photographs of traffic violations," said regional transport officer of Bhubaneswar-II zone S.K. Behera.

After the scheme was launched, residents here had sought a more simple process for submitting photographs.

"It is difficult to get printed copies of photographs clicked on our phone. Also, the RTO office is located near Patia, which is far away from the central part of the city," said Kartik Pradhan, a youth.

While the photographers walk away with Rs 50 for each snap, traffic violators are liable to pay Rs 1,000 for first-time offence and Rs 2,000 for subsequent incidents.

Also, the licence of drivers using mobile phones while driving or violating other road safety norms will be suspended for three months.

A senior transport official claimed that the trend of talking over phone while driving had decreased by almost 80 per cent after the initiative of roping in city residents to keep an eye on the practice.

"The app will be ready within a month," said the official. Some 166 people had died in 565 traffic accidents in the city in 2013. The death toll increased to 177 in 2014 with 516 accidents taking place.
