Koraput ahead in sustainable development goals

Koraput district is ahead of several others in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goal, said May East, Scotland UN fellow, while addressing the Grow Your Own Food congress organised by Thread Siddharth village and Odisha Narisamaj at Kakirigumma here.

This congress and Asian Ecovillage summit has been organised under the global discussions on how to implement these goals regionally and the discussion is also based on practical work conducted by Thread, an Odisha-based development agency and its tribal women’s organisations partners over the past 30 years on women’s empowerment, food security, right livelihood and climate change adaptation, she added.

Inaugurating the congress and Asian Ecovillage summit, Shiva Prasad Panigrahi OAS said the local government is proud that the congress is being held at Koraput district where the farmers are given due importance and attention.

Number of civil societies from different parts of India and abroad, 54 tribal women’s organisations of Orissa Nari Samaj under the network of Global Ecovillage Network, India(GEN India) and government officials attended the Grow Your Own Food congress and Asian Ecovillage summit.

The congress also marks the consolidation of a pilot project 'Grow Your Own Food' implemented by Thread, Siddharth village, Kakirigumma where 500 families were trained and started kitchen gardens to have food for themselves and to distribute healthy food to consumers and for scaling up the same in all districts of Odisha.

Pappaya of various types, multivitamin greens vegetables which can increase haemoglobin within short time, various types of brinjals, cabbage, cauliflower were among various other 15 saplings that were distributed to these families during the training.

Briefing the vision, mission and efforts G John, country representative/ambassador of Global Ecovillage Network said climate change has created havoc on year's crop. GEN India is planned to train people intensively in climate adaptation.

Hemal, one of the spoke persons of Orissa Nari samaj expressed that how this pilot project had rippled in many blocks in Odisha with efforts by different tribal women’s organisations.

Emphasising the need for propagating millets in different regions of Odisha, John said instead of depending only on rice in the context of present climate change issues affecting many farmers, millets need to be promoted.

Appreciating the unique empowerment process of tribal and dalit women of Orissa Nari Samaj initiated by Siddharth village, 15 years back and with its positive result John Susai Raj of Change Alliance, New Delhi said that he's impressed to see the permaculture principles in practice at Siddharth village. Farmers who practice organic farming commit suicide.
