Bengaluru: Residents of Seegehalli, located near Hopefarm Junction in Whitefield, are privileged to enjoy clean drinking water, good roads and an efficient waste management system - thanks to the efforts of the Seegehalli Gram Panchayat.

In contrast to the roads falling under BBMP limits, the roads of Seegehalli, which is around five km from Whitefield, are good and motorists do not dread riding around, residents claim.

The panchayat has passed a resolution to adopt Solid Waste Management (SWM). The panchayat members have been training pourakarmikas and the public on effective SWM practices with the help of Naanu Nagarika, an active citizens’ group from Mahadevapura.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Amaresh Kumar R, panchayat development member, said: “Members from Naanu Nagarika have trained the pourakarmikas on proper waste disposal methods and segregation of dry and wet waste. The SWM policy was passed about two months ago. Due to GP elections, we could not implement it strictly. We will soon set up a compost plant and ask apartment dwellers to manage their own waste.”

The panchayat is also planning to ban the use of plastic. “We have asked shop vendors to use cloth bags. They have sought one month’s time to stop using plastic bags completely,” said Venkatesh Madhu, president of the Panchayat, having a population of 11,000. The  Panchayat collects around Rs two crore through property tax, garbage cess and other taxes from citizens every year and uses the money for the amenities.

Meanwhile, residents seem happy with the developments taking place.

“Had it been under BBMP maintenance, progress would have been doubtful. We are getting regular drinking water and the roads are motorable. The civic condition has improved in the last four years,” said Ramachandrappa, a resident.

In 2014, the State government presented the Seegehalli Gram Panchayat with he Nairmalya award and the Gandhi Grama Puraskar award for efficient civic administration.

The panchayat is also a recipient of the Rashtriya Gaurav Grama Puraskar award.
