RAIPUR: Adopting grafting method and other technology, a Bastar-based farmer has overcome the tribal region's airborne disease bacterial wilt, which hampered the cultivation of brinjal vegetable in this region of Chhattisgarh.

Progressive farmer Ramesh Chawda now gets an yield of 1,25,000kg of brinjal from each acre of his 2.5 acres land. To make brinjal cultivation a success in this terrain, he adopted the horticulture technique of grafting the root and stem of different varieties of brinjal plant to grow them as a single plant.

The inserted root and stem of two different varieties helps fight the bacteria and produce desired genes of healthy brinjal variety.

Head of department of vegetable science at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Dr Jitendra Singh said, "This is a great success story. To achieve around 1,000 quintals of brinjal in Bastar region is remarkable."

Ramesh owns 30 acres of land near Jagdalpur and is growing grafted brinjals in just 2.5 acres of land for last 10 months. For its cultivation, he bought grafted saplings from VNR seeds, learnt the technique and is also helping local farmers to adopt the method. He said, "Getting high yield was a mind-boggling experience for me. People are coming from different areas to check the reality."

"Now the crop is still standing. I am expecting around 50,000kg yield again. The local market of Jagdalpur and nearby places is getting good variety of brinjal supply from other cities. We see a promising market locally as well as in state capital Raipur and towns and cities in neighbouring Odisha and Maharashtra," he added.

Ramesh encourages youth to join the league. "A new avatar of progressive farmers can do wonders. It is a respectable profession like that of doctors and engineers."
