YADGIR (Karnataka): It looks like Narasappa Kotriki has pulled a rabbit out of his hat. The marginal farmer from Tipadampalli village in Yadgir district, who suffered crop loss, has found rearing rabbits quite profitable.

When he fell into bad times, he purchased 100 rabbits (70 male and 30 female) with Rs 1.2 lakh. He spent another Rs. 2.8 lakh for other infrastructure — cages for the rabbits and a shed for establishing the rabbit farm. In the remaining portion of his land, he grew grass and vegetables to feed the rabbits.

“I had drilled at least four borewells in different locations on 2.2 acres of land to irrigate crops such as chilli, cotton and orange, but it just wasn’t enough. I suffered loss and my loans mounted. At this point, I decided to change the course of my life,” said Mr. Kotriki.

Each bunny is fed grass and specially-prepared food of corn, jowar, wheat and Bengal gram twice a day for 120 days. Once it attains 2-kg weight, it is sold for Rs. 200 a kg.

A mother rabbit can give birth to around 30 to 40 bunnies every year. After two years of labour, this June, Mr. Kotriki got returns of Rs. 90,000. His entire family is involved in rabbit rearing — right from feeding to cleaning the cages. “I found that rabbit rearing is quite easy and you can get net benefit after one or two years of farming,” Mr. Kotriki said. “Instead of committing suicide due to crop failure, farmers should look for other avenues of earning,” he said.

When contacted, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry C. Rajshekhar said on Monday that the Union government has introduced new schemes under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), where farmers can avail benefits if they take up rabbit farming.
