VIJAYAWADA: Officials of Krishna district have launched ‘Poushtikaharam-Memu Saitam’ (PMS) scheme for pregnant and lactating women and children enrolled in the Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) to bring down infant mortality during deliveries.

The aim of the PMS is to increase haemoglobin levels among pregnant and lactating women and decrease malnourishment in children.

As part of it, pearl millet (sajja) laddus will be distributed for women and sesame (nuvvula) laddus for children below five years, for six months, in all the AWCs in the district.“Millet laddus provide proteins, carbohydrates, iron and calcium and help bring down child mortality.

The staff in the AWCs will make door-to-door visits, enrol pregnant and lactating mothers and children and provide the laddus in all the 3,812 centres in the district, said Collector B. Lakshmikantam.

Donations

“We are spending about ?25 lakh per month for the scheme. A few organisations have donated ?14.5 lakh and more donations are pouring in for the scheme,” officials said. “PMS has been launched in the State recently and millet laddus are being given to only identified mothers and children. But in Krishna district, millet and sesame laddus are being distributed among about 48,000 mothers and 8,000 children enrolled in Anganwadi Centres,” said Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) district project director K. Krishna Kumari. The Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs), supervisors and other staff were monitoring the implementation of the scheme. As per the feedback, there was good response to the scheme from mothers, Ms. Krishna Kumari said. “Recently, WD&CW secretary K. Sunitha and Mr. Lakshmikantham visited some centres and checked the quality of the millet laddus being distributed there. They interacted with the women and children and expressed satisfaction over the implementation of PMS,” the PD said.
