Unnao, a district in Uttar Pradesh, rarely hits headlines except when its rabble-rousing MP Sakshi Maharaj says something. Now, though, it is making news for all the right reasons, and aren't the women in the region tickled pink about it. From the district magistrate to the superintendent of police, the chief development officer to the chief medical officer, from the zila panchayat president to the sub-divisional magistrate, it's the ladies who have grabbed almost every top administrative posts.

On social media, there is already talk that Unnao is truly and safely in the hands of women. They have a point. While Neha Pandey is the SP, Saumya Agarwal is the DM; Sandeep Kaur is the chief development officer, and Geeta Yadav the chief medical officer. There's more. Sangeeta Sengar was in January this year elected the zila panchayat head, and Jaspreet Kaur and Archana Dwivedi are the two SDMs. Meanwhile, Shruti Shukla is the probation officer, Sherry Masood the child development project officer, Jyoti Choudhury the mandi secretary, Roli Gupta the establishment officer, and Mala Bajpaye the assistant regional transport officer.

Unnao DM Agrawal is a happy woman. She told TOI on Tuesday, "This district is buzzing with enthusiasm over women power. We will work together and the youth seem inspired by us. We send this message nationally: Women should be entrusted with responsibilities and they are very sensitive towards their duties." She added, "Young girls relate to us well. Also, with women colleagues there is a degree of flexibility - we are able to work out things if someone is on leave, etc. Since we are going to be a complete team -- of women on top with Neha (the SP) joining us soon -- I would like to focus our energies on first solving the issue of malnutrition in Unnao." According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), 42% of children in UP in the age group of 0 to 5 years are underweight; 7% are severely malnourished.

Dwivedi, the SDM, said it was Unnao's "good luck" that all the top positions were filled by women. "Yeh Unnao ka bhagya hai (This is Unnao's good fortune)," she chuckled. "Moreover, it is very convenient to work with women colleagues. Even if they call us 10 times in their cabin, there is nothing to hesitate about. This will be an opportunity to work for the health of the girl child. Many of the girls are anemic. We need to take care that our girls eat well and drink milk at government schools."

Sengar, who occupies the powerful zila panchayat head's post, said that at a time when women are fighting for reservation in Parliament, Unnao sends a "very important" empowerment message. "From Unnao, a message has gone out loud and clear," she added. "That women are not only equal to men, they can be tough competition. As zila panchayat president, I am going to work for women's employment, make sure they get the opportunity in whichever field they choose. We are in a dominating position, and it's great."

All the women have their priorities set and goals clear. As CMO, Geeta Yadav said her focus is on reducing the maternal mortality rate. "It is very high here, at 330 per lakh," she pointed out. "That needs to come down. With us (women) here, families will, I am sure, look after their girl child better - give her the best of treatment and encouragement."

Unnao ADM Indra Paal Uttam, though, has the clincher. "The country has had a woman prime minister in Indra Gandhi. So in India, women have been on top. At the end of the day, work sees no gender. There's neither male nor female. We are all modern-day professionals."
