NEW DELHI: With a deadline of March 31, the office of the director, Census 2011, which is supposed to put together the national population register (NPR) has a challenging task at hand. They have to biometrically enrol over 80 lakh Delhiites, which is now mandatory under law. Even those who have already enrolled for Aadhaar UID cards will have to enrol for NPR, as it will link the Aadhaar identity to the citizen register database.

The NPR aims to establish your identity as a resident of India, end duplication and provide access to various government services and schemes through this unique ID. This will be the first-ever comprehensive database ofcitizens.

So far, just about 70 lakh residents have been biometrically enrolled. The digitized data from the Census 2011 for Delhi's 1.67 crore population is available with the office of the director.

However, the enrolment which has been tardy in the last two months is expected to pick up from next week. Advertisements have been proposed to be put up soon to get people to come out and enrol for NPR.

In the first phase of enrolment between April 2011 and August 2012, around 60 lakh residents' details were entered into the database. The second and last phase took off in November and the progress has been slow with just about 10 lakh additional enrolments.

Senior officials from the office of the director, Census 2011, have blamed the delay in the last one month on the cold and tardy payments to data operators. "The payment problem has been resolved now and work is expected to pick up from February 5," said an official on condition of anonymity.

Elaborating on the process, officials said that all residents covered under the house-listing survey for Census 2011 figure on a digitized database.
