Women workers employed in central government industrial units can now take leave for up to two years to look after their kids.

A circular issued by the ministry of personnel and training on August 1 has put women workers at these units on a par with their counterparts at industrial defence establishments, at least as far as getting time off for childcare is concerned.

Last year, the Sixth Pay Commission had decided to grant CCL (childcare leave) to all women employees of defence industrial units so that they could take care of their children. According to the commission, employees with minor children could be granted the leave for a maximum of two years, or 730 days, during their entire service period for taking care of up to two children.

The Centre has now extended this benefit to non-defence industrial workers. This covers all women who work in government-owned industrial units like the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Alipore Mint, Kapurthala Coach factory, Nashik Security Printing Press and all railway engineering units.

Officials said it was imperative that this benefit, which is in addition to maternity leave, was granted to the industrial employees as many of them worked shifts at odd hours, leaving them with little or no time for childcare.

The leave can be taken at one go or over separate spells and be availed till the child/children reach the age of 18. During the leave period, the employees will be paid salary equal to the pay drawn immediately before they proceeded on leave.

Childcare leave will not be debited from other leaves employees are entitled to.
