Bhubaneswar: The livestock population of the state, including cattle, buffalo and goat, saw a sharp drop of 5.59% between 2000 and 2012, government data has revealed. Donkeys have provided the lone saving grace, registering a growth.

This corroborates Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh's remark on sharp decline in livestock population at a review meeting here on Saturday. "Except donkeys, the population of all animals has declined in the state over the years," he said.

According to the latest census, indigenous livestock cattle population in the state has dropped by 3%, while the number of buffaloes and goats has reduced by 39% and 8.5% respectively.

The government report said, "The state had a total 2,42,67,200 number of livestocks in 2000, including hybrid variety of cattle, indigenous cow varieties, buffaloes, goats, sheep and pigs. The number has dropped by 5.59% to 2,07,22,110 in 2012. The number of indigenous cattle has reduced from 1.4 crore to 1.03 crore, while the number of buffaloes has declined from 16.52 lakh to 7.2 lakh. Similarly, the number the livestock sector primarily engages small and marginal farmers and ownership of livestock acts as a buffer in times of natural calamities such as draughts and floods. It is imperative that various central schemes launched for the sector reach the beneficiaries, Singh said.

Fisheries and animal resources development department secretary Bishnupada Sethi said, "Reducing number of livestock is an all-India phenomenon and not just in Odisha. The number of cross breeds is increasing as people are getting more profit from them than the indigenous varieties. Besides, due to farm mechanization, the utility of livestock has also reduced."
