With increasing incidents of robbery and thefts reported from homes, 80% seniors living in major cities worry about break-ins.

This is one of the major reasons why 70% of senior citizens living in nine cities find life in metros hectic and want to move to smaller towns and properties of their own, according to a study.

A survey by A Z Research Partners says that of every 10 aged people, eight worry about their security at home. Many consider it unsafe to employ domestic help.

The survey shows that more and more senior citizens like to live alone as it gives them a sense of freedom, but they do need help with certain household chores.

"Shopping, bill payment and gardening are activities the elderly like to do themselves. The least preferred activities are cooking, ironing clothes, cleaning and doing laundry," said the survey conducted over three months and covering 1,900 senior citizens from 12 cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata. "We collected responses from elderly people who have assets worth Rs 2 crore. If those who can afford a better lifestyle are unhappy then the problem should be more serious as you goes down the income ladder," said managing director Sujay Misra.

The study examines discontent among the elderly for not being able to continue with their lifestyle and the absence of security and amenities. "Fifty-eight per cent responded that they had no inhibitions about moving to a better living space if it offered security (89%), calm and natural environs (83%), non-medical care-giving (81%), social environment (79%) and an aspired lifestyle (76%)," said the survey.

"There is a demand for community centres where elders can check themselves in if they can afford it. These centres are supposed to provide a secure environment, caregivers, a chance to pursue hobbies, opportunities for friendship and recreation," Misra said.
