Aadhaar goof-up merges birthdays

Allahabad: Guests in Kanjasa may not have a cakewalk in selecting which birthday party to attend on January 1.

One in five persons will be blowing out candles the same day, thanks to a technical goof-up that has caused their new Aadhaar cards to mention January 1 as their official date of birth.

Flooded with complaints from residents of the village near Allahabad that their cards do not mention the actual dates of birth, the authorities have ordered a probe and are trying to take remedial measures.

Around 1,000 residents of the village of 5,000 have got cards mentioning January 1 as their official date of birth.

"Nearly 1,000 residents have complained about faulty entries of their date of birth. The odd thing is that the date printed on all these cards is identical - January 1 - with variations in the years of birth," said Neeraj Dubey, the block development officer of Kanjasa, around 50km from Allahabad

The official said the inquiry would focus on how an error of "such huge proportions" occurred.

Dubey said there was speculation the software for the cards was so designed as to automatically allocate January 1 as the birth date for those not aware of the day they were born. That, however, did not explain why those who had submitted their dates of birth with proper documents also ended up being shown as born on January 1, the official said.
