Anti-Kudankulam nuclear power plant activists have come out with a new proposal for finding solution to the impasse by suggesting that the nuclear plant can be converted in to a thermal plant through technical modifications.

Stating that they are aware of the precarious power situation in the country and the need for more power generation, the activists said that they are determined to oppose nuclear power tooth and nail but are ready to accept a thermal plant at the same Kudankulam site.

Reiterating their stiff opposition to nuclear power plants, the activists claimed that there has been no dilution at all in people's protests at Kudankulam and they are determined to see that the plant do not get operational under any circumstances.

At a press conference here on Saturday, a team of anti-nuclear plant activists- A.Marx, K.Sukumaran and A.Rajini- who visited Kudankulam on January 5 and 6 to assess latest situation and public mood, have said that protests and relay fasts are going on without break and that the local people suspect something might be going on inside the nuclear plant complex as those going inside the plant are not coming out in full numbers at the end of the day.

“We will accept a thermal power plant at the same site. With technical modifications, we feel it can be changed and let there be waste of money, but not a threat to people's lives are not at risk.

Mr. Marx, who is a physics professor, has said that there it is possible to convert it in to a thermal plant because there is no fuel yet for the plant.

The activists represent two organisations- People's Union for Human Rights and Federation for People's Rights. They also had a discussion with S.P. Udayakumar, the anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Plant Struggle Committee Convenor.

Power sought from Central pool

The activists demanded Tamil Nadu should be given 1,000 MW of power from the Central pool to tide over power shortage in the State.
