-Press release by National Coalition for Strengthening SCs and STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (NCSPA) dated 1st October 2020

Despite explicit constitutional provision and guidelines, the Dalit community across India remain the worst sufferers of the scourge of the caste system, which perpetuates not an only social hierarchy but also institutional discrimination and social exclusion. In the last few months under Covid-19 pandemic, India witnessed an alarming increase in the cases of atrocities against Dalit and Adivasis. Covid-19 was used by various authorities and officers to ignore the cases of atrocities against the Dalits and Adivasis. Instead, in many cases, Dalits and Adivasis became the victim of the gruesome police brutality for not abiding Covid-19 rules.

The saga of trial and tribulation of Dalits is not that came out outrageously in this pandemic, caste-based discrimination and caste-based human rights violations, denial of access to the legal system, and stigmatisation prevailed for centuries in India. However, looking at the recent escalated number of atrocities against Dalits and Adivasis NCSPA and National Dalit Movement for Justice (NDMJ) analysed the NCRB 2019 Report.

It is the need of the hour to look into the figures and raise questions to the governing bodies and institutions and demand for Justice.
