Lokayukta sleuths raided the residence of a Class IV employee of the Ujjain Municipal Corporation on Wednesday and found documents showing assets worth Rs 4.5 crore.

According to the documents Narendra Deshmukh, a 53-year-old peon-cum-storekeeper, owns two houses, a poultry farm, a chicken shop, five acres of land in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, partnership in a 10-room hotel in Mumbai, two sport utility vehicles (SUVs) worth more than Rs 16 lakh, bank deposits of around Rs 13 lakh, a tempo trax, some jewellery and cash, the police said.

When the 15-member team, led by superintendent of police Arun Mishra, reached Deshmukh’s house, they had to wait for 20 minutes for someone to open to the door. Deshmukh’s pet, a German Shepherd dog, kept barking at the policemen.
Deshmukh’s well-furnished house—plush sofas, beds, carpets, air conditioners and LCD television sets—told of the luxurious life he was leading.

On learning about the team’s arrival, his wife tried to pass on jewellery and other documents to her neighbour from the backdoor, the police said. The sleuths seized the valuables.

Deshmukh had joined the municipal corporation in 1980 as a peon and  continues to hold the post. He handled the charge of store in charge clerk several times but could not get promotion as his name allegedly figured in numerous scams from time to time.

The police said Deshmukh had received a total salary of Rs 15 lakh so far and could not have saved more than Rs 6 lakh. He has a son and a daughter.
