Gadchiroli: A poor tribal woman has been running from pillar to post for the last 15 days to open a bank account.

In absence of a bank account, Sarika Sanjay Madavi, who has a two-month-old child, is unable to avail benefit of a financial assistance scheme of the Maharashtra Government.

The 25-year-old resides with her husband and mother- in-law in village Chatgaon under Dhanora taluka of this Eastern Maharashtra district, which is often in news for Naxal activities.

Apathetic attitude of bank authorities is causing mental agony to the woman, who has to run around for a small sum.

The Health Department has sanctioned a financial assistance of Rs 700 to her under `Janani Suraksha Yojna' after she delivered a baby in July, official sources said.

The department officials asked the woman to give her bank account number so that the amount could be directly deposited in it.

She accordingly approached the Chatgaon branch of a nationalised bank to open a savings account. The bank authorities asked her to produce necessary documents.

After a lot of effort, she managed to get mandatory documents, including the Aadhaar card receipt, and submitted them to the bank, Madavi said.

The bank officials, however, sent her back, saying the papers submitted by her can't be considered "valid" for opening an account, she said.

When asked about this, the bank Manager said the documents provided by the woman are not sufficient for opening a new account. "If she produces all the required documents, her account will be opened."

Despite the Reserve Bank of India's much-touted financial inclusion programme, which entails providing basic services in unbanked areas, people like Madavi still remain out of the formal banking sector.
