Bhubaneswar: With the Centre restricting subsidised cooking gas cylinders to six per year, the Odisha government has been contemplating to provide certain relief to BPL families having LPG connections.

The food, supplies and consumer welfare department has, sources said, undertaken an exercise with the LPG providing oil companies to work out a strategy for the purpose.

Before taking any decision, the state government has proposed to seek information from the oil marketing corporations (OMCs) on the details of families with gas connection along with their economic status like BPL, APL and AAY, sources in oil companies said.

Secretary of food, supplies and consumer welfare Madhusudan Padhi has written a letter in this regard to state level coordinator of the OMCs PK Das, revealed the sources.

The state government wants detailed information about the status of cooking gas consumers by the end of October.

Of the 97 lakh families in Odisha, there are only 18 lakh gas connection holders. Interestingly, it is found that about 40 per cent of the 18 lakh gas consumers require just six cylinders a year while the average APL families need 11 to 12 gas cylinders.

As the Centre has limited the subsidised cylinders to six, the APL families would have to purchase additional cylinders at higher price and are likely to pay about Rs400 extra per additional cylinder.

However, the state government feels that the BPL families may not be able to take the burden.

Therefore, the state may take the burden for the BPL families.

While there is controversy over the exact number of BPL families in the state, the government will take note of such families which have already availed of gas connections.

It is yet to decide whether to extend the proposed facility to the new BPL consumers.

It is found that most of the 40 lakh plus BPL families live in rural areas and they meet their fuel demand by using wood or something else available in rural pockets.

However, the BPL families who live in urban pockets have no alternative than depending on LPG cylinders for cooking.
