MGNREGS workers to be roped in for planting mangroves

Malappuram (Kerala): The district administration and the civic authorities here seem to have woken up to the realization of conserving mangroves.

Beginning this Thursday, which will mark the World Environment Day celebrations, mangroves in some coastal panchayats of Tirur block will be protected and conserved with the help of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) workers.

MGNREGS workers will celebrate the World Environment Day by holding sticks on Thursday to support the mangroves they plant, said an MGNREGS official.

MGNREGS workers are being roped in for mangrove conservation for the first time. Awareness classes were already offered for the MGNREGS workers of Mangalam, Vettom, Purathur, and Thalakkad panchayats, where mangroves will be planted and conserved.

The MGNREGS workers will volunteer to plant 180-odd mangrove plants at a special function to be held near Mangattiri bridge in Vettom grama panchayat on Thursday morning.

C. Mammootty, MLA, will inaugurate the function. District Panchayat president Suhara Mampad will preside. District Collector K. Biju will deliver an environment message.

The Rural Development Department, which handles the MGNREGS, came forward to take up mangrove conservation along with the district administration, District Panchayat, Tirur Block panchayat and the grama panchayats of Vettom, Mangalam, Purathur and Thalakkad, in the wake of widespread destruction of mangroves at several places.

In spite of the environmental importance and sensitivity of mangroves, some people have been opposing mangrove proliferation on grounds of destroying peace and living comfort.

They have been alleging that mangroves were causing them more harm than good.

"This is a baseless allegation. Mangroves definitely does more good to human beings and nature," said K.V. Mohammed Kunhi, director of the Centre for Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development (C-STED).

Dr. Kunhi will deliver the World Environment Day speech at the function. As many as 250 mangrove plants will be planted in Thalakkad when 1,000 will be planted in Mangalam.

In Purathur panchayat, 400 mangroves will be planted. In Vettom, 480 mangroves will be planted.
