A three-member central team reached the cholera-hit Rayagada district today to review measures being taken by the authorities to check the epidemic. The team visited Kalayansinghpur, the worst-affected block of the district.

More cases of cholera deaths were also reported from across the district. While the official death toll stood at 40, unofficial sources claimed that the epidemic had already claimed more than 75 lives in Rayagada district alone. The number of affected persons has touched 1,100.

Besides Rayagada, death cases have also been reported from Nabarangpur, Balangir, Koraput, Nuapada, Bhadrak and Rayagada districts.

Though health minister Prasanna Acharya had apprised chief minister Naveen Patnaik of the steps being taken to prevent the spread of cholera, the latter was reportedly unhappy about the department’s failure to take up a coordinated effort to contain the spread of the disease.

Earlier, despite the government being warned of the possible outbreak of the disease before the monsoon, no steps were taken to meet the situation. The panchayati raj and rural development departments engaged in a blame gave over the who was responsible for providing safe drinking water to the citizens. It was found that contaminated water was a major reason for the outbreak of the disease.

The government has also decided to train all “disharis” (tribal chiefs who are considered doctors by tribals) on how to treat a person who has got cholera.

It was decided that a review meeting on the state of health would be held every year. A time-bound plan would be prepared to develop road, communication and sanitation in the cholera and malaria-affected areas of the state.

At least one tubewell would be set up in each slum cluster and intensive awareness drives would be launched in the affected areas.

Health officials, officials belonging to the Integrated Child Development and representatives of the panchayats, would be included in the drive. The block extension officers would be appointed as nodal officers at the panchayat level and they would be responsible for carrying out health awareness programmes and sanitation drives.
