A pro-nuclear plant agitation has begun: Narayanasamy

Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy on Wednesday briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the situation in Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu, where an agitation is on against the commissioning of the nuclear power plant.

Later speaking to journalists, Mr. Narayanasamy expressed hope that the stalemate would be resolved soon.

“A pro-nuclear plant agitation has started in Kudankulam…The atmosphere is changing slowly.”

Stating that he was in regular touch with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, he said she was cooperating in finding a solution.

The Prime Minister had sent him to Tamil Nadu as the Centre's emissary after protests broke out in mid-August against the 2000 MW nuclear power plant built by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) in collaboration with Russia.

He has held meetings with the Chief Minister and also the protesters.

Talks with Areva

Meanwhile, Director [Technical] of NPCIL S.A. Bharadwaj said the corporation would restart talks with French company, Areva, early next year over the project to set up a nuclear power plant at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.

Noting that the French Nuclear Regulator (ARN) was currently in the process of reviewing Areva's nuclear reactors in the wake of the nuclear disaster at Fukushima in Japan following an earthquake-tsunami earlier this year, he said ARN was expected to come out with its review report next month.
