Six of them ordered to appear on July 7

A court here has issued summons to six Delhi Police personnel who were charge-sheeted for the infamous midnight clampdown on Baba Ramdev's followers at Ramlila Maidan here on June 4 last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Anil Kumar summoned Sub-Inspector Sushil Kumar, Head Constable Vijender and Constables Ravi, Dinesh, Tejinder and Krishan. They have been charge-sheeted under Section 336 (endangering life and personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

The cognisance of the charge sheet was taken this past week on June 4, and the accused policemen have been summoned to appear in the court on July 7. The investigating officer (IO) in the case told the court that further probe in the case was still going on to identify other persons who might be involved and a supplementary charge sheet might be filed if the “other persons are identified”.

“This charge sheet has been filed by the IO after investigation conducted in compliance of the directions given by the Supreme Court of India in Writ Petition (Criminal) 122/2011. I have perused the charge sheet and documents filed by the IO. I hereby take cognizance of offence U/s 336 IPC. In the Para No.11 of charge sheet, six police officials have been named as accused...Let accused persons named in the Para No.11 of the charge sheet be summoned through IO for July 7,” the court said.

Video footage summoned from news channels, which has been annexed with the charge sheet, allegedly helped the probe identify the accused policemen. They have been accused of using excessive force and lathi-charging the protesters without their superiors giving an order to do so.

On February 23, the Supreme Court had directed criminal cases to be taken up against police personnel and others who had indulged in violence, destruction of public and private property, and brick-batting.
