                            <div align="justify">Calling for an immediate halt to the Jaitapur nuclear power project in Maharashtra, the Communist Party of India(Marxist) on Tuesday said environment clearance should be withdrawn and the entire issue re-examined in the backdrop of the developments in tsunami-hit Japan.<br /><br />In a statement, the Polit Bureau said a party delegation which recently visited the project area confirmed that locals were totally opposed to the location of the plant and to forcible acquisition of their land.<br /><br />&ldquo;Given the crisis which has developed in some of the nuclear power reactors in Japan after the tsunami and the threat of a meltdown, it is imperative that the environmental clearance given to the project be withdrawn.<br /><br />The Jaitapur project &ldquo;is to be set up with imported nuclear plants from the French company, Areva, and these reactors based on the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology have not been commissioned for operation anywhere in the world yet,&rdquo; the statement said.<br /><br />&ldquo;There are questions about the reliability and safety of these new reactors, which are also much more expensive. Both in France and Finland, construction of these reactors have run into various difficulties.&rdquo;<br /><br />Rejecting the justification by authorities of the EPR project at Jaitapur, the CPI(M) emphasised that the safety and interests of the people in the area and the rest of the country were paramount.</div>

                            <div align="justify">Calling for an immediate halt to the Jaitapur nuclear power project in Maharashtra, the Communist Party of India(Marxist) on Tuesday said environment clearance should be withdrawn and the entire issue re-examined in the backdrop of the developments in tsunami-hit Japan.<br /><br />In a statement, the Polit Bureau said a party delegation which recently visited the project area confirmed that locals were totally opposed to the location of the plant and to forcible acquisition of their land.<br /><br />&ldquo;Given the crisis which has developed in some of the nuclear power reactors in Japan after the tsunami and the threat of a meltdown, it is imperative that the environmental clearance given to the project be withdrawn.<br /><br />The Jaitapur project &ldquo;is to be set up with imported nuclear plants from the French company, Areva, and these reactors based on the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology have not been commissioned for operation anywhere in the world yet,&rdquo; the statement said.<br /><br />&ldquo;There are questions about the reliability and safety of these new reactors, which are also much more expensive. Both in France and Finland, construction of these reactors have run into various difficulties.&rdquo;<br /><br />Rejecting the justification by authorities of the EPR project at Jaitapur, the CPI(M) emphasised that the safety and interests of the people in the area and the rest of the country were paramount.</div>

                            <div align="justify">Calling for an immediate halt to the Jaitapur nuclear power project in Maharashtra, the Communist Party of India(Marxist) on Tuesday said environment clearance should be withdrawn and the entire issue re-examined in the backdrop of the developments in tsunami-hit Japan.<br /><br />In a statement, the Polit Bureau said a party delegation which recently visited the project area confirmed that locals were totally opposed to the location of the plant and to forcible acquisition of their land.<br /><br />&ldquo;Given the crisis which has developed in some of the nuclear power reactors in Japan after the tsunami and the threat of a meltdown, it is imperative that the environmental clearance given to the project be withdrawn.<br /><br />The Jaitapur project &ldquo;is to be set up with imported nuclear plants from the French company, Areva, and these reactors based on the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology have not been commissioned for operation anywhere in the world yet,&rdquo; the statement said.<br /><br />&ldquo;There are questions about the reliability and safety of these new reactors, which are also much more expensive. Both in France and Finland, construction of these reactors have run into various difficulties.&rdquo;<br /><br />Rejecting the justification by authorities of the EPR project at Jaitapur, the CPI(M) emphasised that the safety and interests of the people in the area and the rest of the country were paramount.</div>

CPI(M): abandon Jaitapur project

Calling for an immediate halt to the Jaitapur nuclear power project in Maharashtra, the Communist Party of India(Marxist) on Tuesday said environment clearance should be withdrawn and the entire issue re-examined in the backdrop of the developments in tsunami-hit Japan. In a statement, the Polit Bureau said a party delegation which recently visited the project area confirmed that locals were totally opposed to the location of the plant and to forcible acquisition of their land. “Given the crisis which has developed in some of the nuclear power reactors in Japan after the tsunami and the threat of a meltdown, it is imperative that the environmental clearance given to the project be withdrawn. The Jaitapur project “is to be set up with imported nuclear plants from the French company, Areva, and these reactors based on the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology have not been commissioned for operation anywhere in the world yet,” the statement said. “There are questions about the reliability and safety of these new reactors, which are also much more expensive. Both in France and Finland, construction of these reactors have run into various difficulties.” Rejecting the justification by authorities of the EPR project at Jaitapur, the CPI(M) emphasised that the safety and interests of the people in the area and the rest of the country were paramount.
