State rejects proposals for new police stations; cites financial reasons

Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh): Crime against women registered an upward trend in Cyberabad this year, with nearly 400 additional cases being booked compared to the previous year.

As many as 2,391 cases pertaining to crime against women were booked this year when compared to 1,914 registered last year. Of them, 1,565 cases pertained to harassment, while 334 were related to outraging of modesty and 135 concerned with rapes. Of these cases, 110 are Nirbhaya Act cases, Cyberabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said during his annual press conference here on Friday.

Mr. Anand said the Cyberabad Police had taken various measures for the safety of women working in the IT and ITeS sectors in the light of the rape of a software engineer a few weeks ago. Charge-sheets will be filed against two car drivers arrested in connection with the techie's rape within a week, he added.

In all, 27,156 FIRs were issued in 2013 as against 24,922 in 2012. "We have asked station house officers to book case whenever anyone comes with a specific complaint, and this has led to rise in issuing FIRs this time," he explained. Cyber crime cases, too, have gone up, with police registering 103 cases in 2013 compared to 62 in 2012. Of the 103 cases, police detected 32 cases.

Robbery, burglary, chain snatching and vehicle theft have also increased. "But, we have successfully dealt with the law and order situation in Cyberabad, besides nabbing several gangs involved in thefts. The sensational theft case in Mahesh Cooperative Urban Bank was detected within a few days after the incident," he reminded. New software is being procured to probe cyber crimes, the Commissioner added.

The State government has rejected proposals to establish 16 new police stations, including eight law and order police stations, citing financial reasons.

"We have requested the government to sanction funds for opening Gachibowli, Jawaharnagar, Jagadgirigutta and Moula Ali police stations due to increasing crime. We are hopeful that these police stations would be operational from next year," he said.

Fatalities on highways, including the Outer Ring Road, have also gone up.
