-Press release by Every Woman Treaty dated September 30, 2022

Every Woman, a coalition of more than 1,700 women's rights advocates in 128 countries, including India, has developed the findings-based draft instrument (Zero Draft EWT), informed by extensive consultation with experts from all regions of the world, including survivors, frontline activists, medical specialists, practitioners, scholars, human rights attorneys, and policy-makers. This Draft of global binding norm focuses on violence prevention and survivor services. It is ready to be carried forward by diplomats and world leaders.

You can also provide your support by signing the global call for the Every Woman Treaty on this link - https://everywoman.org/the-peoples-treaty/.

World leaders increasingly understand the need for a new instrument to eliminate violence against women. Heads of State like President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria have championed the call. So have Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, and Tawakkol Karman, and former UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, professor of law Rashida Manjoo. In June 2022, during the IX Summit of the Americas’ Second Plenary Session, Former Colombian President Iván Duque and the Organization of American States, via the voice of its representative, Secretary G President Iván Duqueeneral Almagro, echoed the call.

Every Woman is working with different South Asian governments as well to bring leaders and policy makers on board towards supporting the treaty and its successful implementation. Coalitions with social organizations and government bodies are being made at national and continental levels for the Treaty. This Treaty has tremendous potential to transform the world for women and girls for generations to come. The implementation of the treaty in India would ensure creation of more gender just legislations and therefore, a safer society for women and girls. Media coverage of the Treaty in different formats – reports, interviews, features, etc. at this juncture is essential to draw the attention of the policymakers and the public. Events related to the Treaty such as conferences, campaigns, coalition meetings etc. will be held at regular intervals.

Every Woman Treaty also published the report titled Safer Sooner 2020. The report summarizes Every Woman Treaty's eight years of research on how to fill gaps in the current international legal architecture.

The key findings of the report titled Safer Sooner 2020 by Every Woman are as follows:

• More than one in three women worldwide experience sexual assault or intimate partner violence, or 1.3 billion women.

• As many as 38 percent of murders of women are committed by a male intimate partner.

• For indigenous women, rates of violence are reportedly as high as one in two women.

• 79 percent of all detected trafficking victims are women and children.

• The total number of girls married in childhood stands at 14.2 million per year.

• 42 percent of women who experience intimate partner violence report an injury as a result of violence.

• Survivors of intimate partner violence are 55 percent more likely to be HIV positive.

• Women who have been physically or sexually abused by their partners are almost twice as likely to experience depression.

• Women who experience intimate partner violence are 2.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer.

• Globally, women who have been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner are 2.3 times more likely to have alcoholuse disorders and 2.6 times more likely to experience depression or anxiety.

• Women living with violent men in the United States may be 5 times more likely to commit suicide than women living in nonviolent homes.

• Women who experience intimate partner violence are less likely to seek preventive care, such as regular check-ups and cancer screening, which has clear implications for women’s overall health.
