Burdwan, April 25: The cash-strapped government has been spending almost Rs 1 crore annually on a state-owned dairy in Burdwan lying defunct for the past four years.

The 62 employees at Burdwan Dugdhagar have been drawing their salaries with virtually no work though the Trinamul government is working on a plan to hand over the unit to another state-owned milk producing unit.

An official said the Burdwan dairy produced 20,000 litres of milk daily when it was set up in 1993. The output plunged to around 4,000 litres in 2005-06.

Production stopped in 2008. Since then, the employees have been idle despite nearly Rs 7.5 lakh being spent each month on their salaries.

The trouble began within four years of the plant starting operations when its chilling units at milk collection centres in Katwa, Manteswar, Shaktigarh and Khandaghosh developed snags. The main chilling plant in Burdwan also broke down a few years later.

A dairy official suggested the Left Front government could have addressed the problems at no great cost. “Perfunctory repairs were done at the chilling units when an overhaul was required. If the previous government could spend Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 on the overhaul, the dairy would not have had to stop production,” the official said.

The secretary of the Trinamul-affiliated employees’ union at the dairy, Mujibar Rahman, said of the 62 employees, 11 were clerks, two officers, two group D staff while the remaining were production hands.

“At present we have no work. Only some clerical work is done like drawing up salary bills and sending it to the treasury. We just come to the dairy, while away our time chatting and having tea and then go home,” said Rahman, an operator in the production department.

Milk commissioner Uday Shankar Nandi blamed equipment and raw material problems.

“We have drawn up a plan to start production again by handing it over to Mother Dairy,” said Nandi, but added that the final decision is yet to be taken.

Mother Dairy, a profitable venture, is also run by the state government.
