A senior central forest officer today sealed his report after visiting Dalma for a final word from Union forest and environment minister Jairam Ramesh on declaring the elephant sanctuary and its adjoining areas an eco-sensitive zone, a proposed tag that Tata Steel has objected to.

Inspector-general(wildlife) of the Union ministry of forest A.K. Srivastava was sent to Jharkhand after Tata Steel sent a letter to Ramesh on June 24 raising concerns about the company’s industrial prospects in the Dalma area if it was declared an eco-sensitive zone.

On his maiden trip to Dalma this morning, Srivastava admitted he was “bowled over” by its greenery. Chief conservator of forests (wildlife) A.K. Gupta said, “He expressed satisfaction with the state of the elephant sanctuary and said a decision would be known soon.”

Speaking to The Telegraph, Srivastava said the sanctuary and its adjoining areas were “worth preserving”, hinting he was personally not opposed to granting it the environmentally sensitive classification, butadded development was as important as preserving the environment.

“The status of an eco-sensitive zone is a must for any sanctuary and we will soon come out with a notification. But we also welcome the concernsof Tata Steel and will soon walk a safe path,” said Srivastava, who is understood to have met officials of the steel major yesterday.

“We don’t see the letter from Tata Steel as objection. We see it as suggestions solely because after updating the draft plan on our ministry’s website we asked for suggestions from all possible stakeholders. Tatas came up with their concerns and we will definitely take all into account before finally declaring it an eco-zone,” added the IG, who made an aerial survey of the area in a chopper from Jamshedpur airport in the morning.

“After taking off, we toured to and from Galudih to Chandil covering both the sanctuary and adjacent areas in details,” an official, who accompanied him, said.

The IG left for New Delhi this afternoon.

According to a forest department source, during his discussions with Tata Steel officials, Srivastava was told of the company’s plans to lay piplelines to tap water from Dimna lake and that the draft plan might hamper that.
