Delayed monsoon rains in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are expected to impact the sowing of key crops such as cotton, groundnut, soybean, moong, urad, tur, seasum and potato. Farmers who had prepared the land in the hope of rains by June 15 are worried.

According to the India Meteorological Department , monsoon is likely to remain subdued over the three states. AB Majumdar, deputy director general meteorology, Pune, said, "Rainfall will remain subdued over Maharashtra and Gujarat over the next three to four days as the monsoon current has become weak. Thereafter too, mild rainfall is expected as there is no indication of any disturbance."

The advanced pre-monsoon showers across the western region of the country had raised hopes of rains on time during sowing. At a few places across the three states, farmer might have to go for re-sowing due to the recent inclement weather.

Gujarat's principal secretary, agriculture , RK Tripathi said, "Farmers need not panic at this stage. Over 20% sowing in the irrigated belt of south Gujarat covering 15 lakh hectare has taken place which is much low compared to the previous year. The monsoon system is expected to set in by July 3 and expected to bring rain by July 6." According to government data, cotton has been sown on over 5 lakh hectare and groundnut on over 4 lakh hectare. He said farmers who had sown cotton and groundnut in Saurashtra and north Gujarat after the pre-monsoon showers in the first week of June might have to go for resowing.

In Maharashtra, where the monsoon set in two days ahead of its schedule, rainfall has been insufficient for sowing kharif pulses, soybean and cotton. Over 50% of cotton sowing had been completed in Maharashtra, which has the largest cotton acreage in the country, by June 27 last year. This year, only 18% sowing has been completed during the same period. The hardy fibre crop needs good rainfall during sowing stage followed by four to five spells of rainfall in the deep black cotton soils of Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The monsoon set in by June 24 in Rajasthan but there have not been enough rains in the western part of the state. Farmers in Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Barmer and Nagaur are still waiting for good rains. However, sowing is in full swing in eastern districts such as Bharatpur, Dhopur, Karauli and Sawai Madhopur while farmers in the flooded Hadauti region comprising Baran and Kota districts are waiting for water to recede from their farms. The flood-like situation in these areas is keeping farmers away from cultivation.

According to Rajasthan agriculture department officials, kharif sowing has begun in the state. Around 97% of cotton sowing has been completed while only 10% of bajra has been sown. Guar sowing is yet to begin. "Sowing will pick up as the monsoon progresses."

Across Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra sowing has been delayed for cereals like paddy, jowar, bajra and maize, short-duration pulses like tur, moong and urad and oil seeds like soybean, sesame seed and sunflower seed.
