Delhi air pollution hit severe levels on Tuesday, prompting officials to shut down junior sections in schools and recommend a four-fold hike in parking fees as well as a cut in Metro fares.

New Delhi gasped for oxygen on Tuesday as a toxic haze reduced visibility, affected flights and trains, and prompted chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to describe the national capital as a “gas chamber”. (Highlights)

Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia announced shutting the junior sections in schools across the city on Wednesday, as pollution levels breached permissible standards by multiple times.

Junior classes will remain closed for some more days if the air quality doesn’t improve, he said.

The government also advised against outdoor activities such as morning assemblies in schools as drastic measures are proposed to clean up the filthy air shrouding the city of more than 20 million people.

The Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution and Control Authority (Epca) ordered a four-time hike in parking fee in New Delhi and its satellite cities to reduce the use of private cars as vehicle exhaust is considered one of the primary sources of air pollution.

Metro was asked to slash fares after peak hours and governments were told to increase the number and frequency of public buses.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) rapped the Centre and the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab over the spike in pollution and asked why helicopters were not used to sprinkle water to control the floating dust.
