The Delhi government has launched a series of three Hindi posters on child sexual abuse to spread awareness among school children at a time when such assaults are on the rise in the national Capital.

The women and child development department put up around 5,000 copies of the posters — which highlight ‘good and bad touch’, ways to protect themselves against inappropriate behaviour and whom to contact in such a situation among other issues — across all Delhi government schools.

“These posters depict the mechanisms to deal with the situations of abuse or potential abuse. As we have used colours, easy language and pictures, children will be able to understand the issue easily. A number of schools said they were getting good response from students,” said a senior Delhi government official.

According to the official, the posters would help teachers easily broach the sensitive issue with children.

“Instead of an ad hoc approach towards creating awareness through just advertisements, we wanted to have a more long-term and sustainable intervention. Through these posters teachers will be able to discuss these issues easily with children,” said a senior Delhi government official.

According to a report in 2007, over 85% of the offenders were known to the children and among the abused children, only 25% had told anyone.

The move is part of the government’s protection policy that includes comprehensive awareness modules for children, parents and teachers. For instance, the module for 5 to 8-year-olds describes positive and harmful practices, defines sexual abuse, stresses on personal safety and good touch/bad touch.

Similarly, the module for 9 to 12-year-olds explains forced sexual activity, sexual abuse and its prevention, understanding their bodies’ changing physiology and needs among others.

The module for 12 to 18-year-olds will include even deeper knowledge such as legal provisions and remedies available.
