Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Wednesday released a letter written by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to social activist Anna Hazare, to buttress his earlier claim that Hazare’s anti-corruption movement was backed by the RSS.

“In your efforts against corruption, you have the full support of RSS,” stated the letter dated 8 April, written by RSS general secretary Suresh Joshi. “We think that the ongoing efforts and movements against corruption will surely give expected results.”

The release of the letter comes a day after Singh wrote a four-page letter to Hazare, criticizing him for his anti-Congress stand and warning him about his supporters.

In another letter to Hazare on Wednesday, Singh said: “How can I accept that you have not read this (RSS) letter? If you have not read this letter then it is an even more serious issue. As I have told you earlier, the people around you are keeping you away from the real situations,” Digvijay wrote.

Mint has reviewed copies of both the letters.

The RSS said it has extended support to all anti-corruption movements, including Hazare’s.

“We had passed a resolution in March to support all anti-corruption movements. Like we have asked our members to support (yoga guru) Ramdev and (Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K.) Advani’s anti-corruption movements, we asked them to support Hazare,” said Ram Madhav, national executive member of RSS.

RSS support to Hazare was not a secret and was a non-issue, Madhav added. “We pity Digvijay Singh; he could have saved the hardship of digging out the letter as we had ourselves released this letter in April,” he said.
