Doctor call on stent prices

New Delhi: A group of Indian doctors has urged the Narendra Modi government to resist any US government or industry pressure to reverse its decisions earlier this year to impose price caps on coronary stents and knee implants.

The Association of Doctors for Ethical Practices (ADEH) said on Wednesday that it is hoping the Indian government will "remain firm" on its decision to cap the prices of the devices because many people were unable to afford them at their earlier unregulated prices.

The ADEH statement follows concerns among sections of doctors and health activists that a US-based association of medical device makers had last week petitioned the US government requesting that certain trade benefits to India be suspended or withdrawn in the light of India's "failure to provide equitable and reasonable access to its market for medical devices".

The US government said in a release after talks between US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Indian commerce minister Suresh Prabhu last week that "both sides had differing views which could not be resolved immediately".

A report in news website The Wire has said Lighthizer had in a September 18 letter to Prabhu called the price control on stents "troubling" as it does not differentiate between regular and more sophisticated stents and forced companies to sell innovative products in India at "significant loss".

The ADEH has said the Indian government should not succumb to such pressure. "Scientific data suggests that so-called innovative re-absorbable stents are in no way superior to the drug-eluting stents on which prices have been capped."

"The Indian government had rejected the companies' demand for differential pricing of stents because the companies had failed to submit verifiable and credible evidence to show the clinical superiority of the so-called innovative stents," said Arun Gadre, a physician and spokesperson for the ADEH.
