‘Don’t blame it on RTE... implement it well’ by Meghna Sharma

Remember those days when we woke up at five in the morning to revise the history chapters while longing to go back to bed for some time more. That was the 1990s; today, students don’t have to worry much about examinations thanks to the new policies under RTE.

According to the RTE's 'no- fail' policy, students cannot be detained in Std I to VIII. The move was made to ease the pressure among students and to end the age-old rote learning methodology among students.

“Even though I was good in studies the word ‘exam’ used to scare me. The thought of failing and being held back in the same class was too humiliating for me,” says Rachana Singh, an architect.

The present generation of students is a lucky lot, feels the generation which graduated a decade ago. “We didn’t have it as easy as today’s students. We had examinations, we had assignments and of course we had percentage system, where all of us were competing against each other,” says Saurabh Sawant, an IT professional.

Like Sawant, there are many who agree that even they too felt the pressure but knew how to handle it, unlike the present lot. With an increase in suicide among students in the last few years has been appaling.

“The authorities need to look into the matter more deeply. Just introducing grading system or by not failing the students aren’t the solutions,” feels Hema T, a mother of a std VII student.

However, there are many who feel that the changes under the RTE are needed as the competition has increased manifold. Kavita Anand, an educationist, feels that many haven't understood the RTE Act and haven’t been able to implement it well.

“For years now, the teachers weren’t supposed to hold back students in the primary section and even in the secondary section they weren’t supposed to grade strictly. So, one cannot blame the no-fail policy now,” adds Anand.

Many teachers and parents feel that today students have to be told —even if they pass easily today — what they learn in the classroom, will help them later. There will be no easy transitions in the competitive world.
