And now the world knows it too - a recent survey by Organization for Economic co-operation and Development (OECD) says that an average Indian man has the dubious distinction of spending all of 19 minutes a day on routine housework, among the lowest in the world.</p><p align="justify">Three other Asian nations scored low on the index - Japanese (24), Korean (21) and Chinese (48). So where can you find a man who does housework? In Slovenia where men spent 114 minutes a day on unpaid housework, followed by Denmark and Estonia.</p><p align="justify">It is a socially well-accepted reality in most Indian households, even where both spouses are working, that women end up handling most household chores. And data confirms that - the OECD study showed that Indian women spent a huge 298 minutes on routine housework such as cooking, laundry, pets, home maintenance etc. They spend 221 minutes on leisure which includes watching TV, sports, entertaining etc compared to 283 minutes for men.</p><p align="justify">So what do Indian men while away their time doing? The average Indian man spends more than 703 minutes (11 hours a day) on personal care - mostly sleeping, eating and drinking. &quot;It is not just a cultural practice, it is a glorified cultural practice. Mothers celebrate the fact that their sons never lifted a finger at home,&quot; says Santosh Desai, a social commentator and columnist. </p><p align="justify">Though the OECD has relied on statistics from the 1990s for India, a more recent 2010 survey conducted by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) in India also found that only 16% of men reported that they played an equal or greater role in household duties. &quot;Those who sincerely want to help, don't know how to. They have not been trained to make a cup of tea or change an LPG cylinder,&quot; says Sairee Chahal, founder Sheroes, an online jobs and mentorship portal for women.</p><p align="justify">Chahal frequently comes across cases of women who have had to take time off from their professional careers to take care of children or the elderly in the family. &quot;You will hardly ever find men who take time off from work to take care of an ailing parent,&quot; says Chahal.</p><p align="justify">Clearly, very few. Such skewed gender roles are further perpetrated by popular media, like television and cinema where a man working in the kitchen or washing clothes is shown as a buffoon. For example, a TV commercial for a popular detergent shows a small child mimicking his father in front of some house guests. At work or on the road the father behaves like the 'king of his castle'. But when the child is asked what does &quot;papa do at home&quot;, he takes off his shirt and starts to mock wash it inviting peals of laughter from the guests and embarrassed looks from the parents.</p><p align="justify">However, the gender cliches are changing. A few months ago, a new television commercial for a dishwashing liquid pleasantly surprised viewers by showing a couple that shared dishwashing duties. While Desai thinks that the advertisement is &quot;ahead of reality&quot;, he admits that some sense of partnership is creeping in between men and women. &quot;The change is faster in certain areas of work. For example, men have started to buy vegetables but they are not yet ready to chop them,&quot; he says.</p><p align="justify">Of course, it is unfair to paint everyone with the same brush. There have been men who have shouldered household chores and many continue to do so. Rohan Joshi, a Mumbai-based stand-up comedian, for instance, says that he likes doing the cleaning and washing at home. &quot;I can't cook so I have a help who cooks for me but I do my own dishes,&quot; says Joshi, who intends to continue helping with the chores after he gets married. &quot;It all depends on an individual's mindset,&quot; he says. </p>

You actually are slaving several more hours over the stove, the mop and childcare while your husband, father and brother are busy watching cricket. And now the world knows it too - a recent survey by Organization for Economic co-operation and Development (OECD) says that an average Indian man has the dubious distinction of spending all of 19 minutes a day on routine housework, among the lowest in the world.</p><p align="justify">Three other Asian nations scored low on the index - Japanese (24), Korean (21) and Chinese (48). So where can you find a man who does housework? In Slovenia where men spent 114 minutes a day on unpaid housework, followed by Denmark and Estonia.</p><p align="justify">It is a socially well-accepted reality in most Indian households, even where both spouses are working, that women end up handling most household chores. And data confirms that - the OECD study showed that Indian women spent a huge 298 minutes on routine housework such as cooking, laundry, pets, home maintenance etc. They spend 221 minutes on leisure which includes watching TV, sports, entertaining etc compared to 283 minutes for men.</p><p align="justify">So what do Indian men while away their time doing? The average Indian man spends more than 703 minutes (11 hours a day) on personal care - mostly sleeping, eating and drinking. &quot;It is not just a cultural practice, it is a glorified cultural practice. Mothers celebrate the fact that their sons never lifted a finger at home,&quot; says Santosh Desai, a social commentator and columnist. </p><p align="justify">Though the OECD has relied on statistics from the 1990s for India, a more recent 2010 survey conducted by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) in India also found that only 16% of men reported that they played an equal or greater role in household duties. &quot;Those who sincerely want to help, don't know how to. They have not been trained to make a cup of tea or change an LPG cylinder,&quot; says Sairee Chahal, founder Sheroes, an online jobs and mentorship portal for women.</p><p align="justify">Chahal frequently comes across cases of women who have had to take time off from their professional careers to take care of children or the elderly in the family. &quot;You will hardly ever find men who take time off from work to take care of an ailing parent,&quot; says Chahal.</p><p align="justify">Clearly, very few. Such skewed gender roles are further perpetrated by popular media, like television and cinema where a man working in the kitchen or washing clothes is shown as a buffoon. For example, a TV commercial for a popular detergent shows a small child mimicking his father in front of some house guests. At work or on the road the father behaves like the 'king of his castle'. But when the child is asked what does &quot;papa do at home&quot;, he takes off his shirt and starts to mock wash it inviting peals of laughter from the guests and embarrassed looks from the parents.</p><p align="justify">However, the gender cliches are changing. A few months ago, a new television commercial for a dishwashing liquid pleasantly surprised viewers by showing a couple that shared dishwashing duties. While Desai thinks that the advertisement is &quot;ahead of reality&quot;, he admits that some sense of partnership is creeping in between men and women. &quot;The change is faster in certain areas of work. For example, men have started to buy vegetables but they are not yet ready to chop them,&quot; he says.</p><p align="justify">Of course, it is unfair to paint everyone with the same brush. There have been men who have shouldered household chores and many continue to do so. Rohan Joshi, a Mumbai-based stand-up comedian, for instance, says that he likes doing the cleaning and washing at home. &quot;I can't cook so I have a help who cooks for me but I do my own dishes,&quot; says Joshi, who intends to continue helping with the chores after he gets married. &quot;It all depends on an individual's mindset,&quot; he says. </p>

You actually are slaving several more hours over the stove, the mop and childcare while your husband, father and brother are busy watching cricket. And now the world knows it too - a recent survey by Organization for Economic co-operation and Development (OECD) says that an average Indian man has the dubious distinction of spending all of 19 minutes a day on routine housework, among the lowest in the world.</p><p align="justify">Three other Asian nations scored low on the index - Japanese (24), Korean (21) and Chinese (48). So where can you find a man who does housework? In Slovenia where men spent 114 minutes a day on unpaid housework, followed by Denmark and Estonia.</p><p align="justify">It is a socially well-accepted reality in most Indian households, even where both spouses are working, that women end up handling most household chores. And data confirms that - the OECD study showed that Indian women spent a huge 298 minutes on routine housework such as cooking, laundry, pets, home maintenance etc. They spend 221 minutes on leisure which includes watching TV, sports, entertaining etc compared to 283 minutes for men.</p><p align="justify">So what do Indian men while away their time doing? The average Indian man spends more than 703 minutes (11 hours a day) on personal care - mostly sleeping, eating and drinking. &quot;It is not just a cultural practice, it is a glorified cultural practice. Mothers celebrate the fact that their sons never lifted a finger at home,&quot; says Santosh Desai, a social commentator and columnist. </p><p align="justify">Though the OECD has relied on statistics from the 1990s for India, a more recent 2010 survey conducted by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) in India also found that only 16% of men reported that they played an equal or greater role in household duties. &quot;Those who sincerely want to help, don't know how to. They have not been trained to make a cup of tea or change an LPG cylinder,&quot; says Sairee Chahal, founder Sheroes, an online jobs and mentorship portal for women.</p><p align="justify">Chahal frequently comes across cases of women who have had to take time off from their professional careers to take care of children or the elderly in the family. &quot;You will hardly ever find men who take time off from work to take care of an ailing parent,&quot; says Chahal.</p><p align="justify">Clearly, very few. Such skewed gender roles are further perpetrated by popular media, like television and cinema where a man working in the kitchen or washing clothes is shown as a buffoon. For example, a TV commercial for a popular detergent shows a small child mimicking his father in front of some house guests. At work or on the road the father behaves like the 'king of his castle'. But when the child is asked what does &quot;papa do at home&quot;, he takes off his shirt and starts to mock wash it inviting peals of laughter from the guests and embarrassed looks from the parents.</p><p align="justify">However, the gender cliches are changing. A few months ago, a new television commercial for a dishwashing liquid pleasantly surprised viewers by showing a couple that shared dishwashing duties. While Desai thinks that the advertisement is &quot;ahead of reality&quot;, he admits that some sense of partnership is creeping in between men and women. &quot;The change is faster in certain areas of work. For example, men have started to buy vegetables but they are not yet ready to chop them,&quot; he says.</p><p align="justify">Of course, it is unfair to paint everyone with the same brush. There have been men who have shouldered household chores and many continue to do so. Rohan Joshi, a Mumbai-based stand-up comedian, for instance, says that he likes doing the cleaning and washing at home. &quot;I can't cook so I have a help who cooks for me but I do my own dishes,&quot; says Joshi, who intends to continue helping with the chores after he gets married. &quot;It all depends on an individual's mindset,&quot; he says. </p>

Indian men spend a mere 19 minutes a day on housework -Shobita Dhar

-The Times of India No, it isn't just a feeling. You actually are slaving several more hours over the stove, the mop and childcare while your husband, father and brother are busy watching cricket. And now the world knows it too - a recent survey by Organization for Economic co-operation and Development (OECD) says that an average Indian man has the dubious distinction of spending all of 19 minutes a day on routine housework, among the lowest in the world. Three other Asian nations scored low on the index - Japanese (24), Korean (21) and Chinese (48). So where can you find a man who does housework? In Slovenia where men spent 114 minutes a day on unpaid housework, followed by Denmark and Estonia. It is a socially well-accepted reality in most Indian households, even where both spouses are working, that women end up handling most household chores. And data confirms that - the OECD study showed that Indian women spent a huge 298 minutes on routine housework such as cooking, laundry, pets, home maintenance etc. They spend 221 minutes on leisure which includes watching TV, sports, entertaining etc compared to 283 minutes for men. So what do Indian men while away their time doing? The average Indian man spends more than 703 minutes (11 hours a day) on personal care - mostly sleeping, eating and drinking. "It is not just a cultural practice, it is a glorified cultural practice. Mothers celebrate the fact that their sons never lifted a finger at home," says Santosh Desai, a social commentator and columnist. Though the OECD has relied on statistics from the 1990s for India, a more recent 2010 survey conducted by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) in India also found that only 16% of men reported that they played an equal or greater role in household duties. "Those who sincerely want to help, don't know how to. They have not been trained to make a cup of tea or change an LPG cylinder," says Sairee Chahal, founder Sheroes, an online jobs and mentorship portal for women. Chahal frequently comes across cases of women who have had to take time off from their professional careers to take care of children or the elderly in the family. "You will hardly ever find men who take time off from work to take care of an ailing parent," says Chahal. Clearly, very few. Such skewed gender roles are further perpetrated by popular media, like television and cinema where a man working in the kitchen or washing clothes is shown as a buffoon. For example, a TV commercial for a popular detergent shows a small child mimicking his father in front of some house guests. At work or on the road the father behaves like the 'king of his castle'. But when the child is asked what does "papa do at home", he takes off his shirt and starts to mock wash it inviting peals of laughter from the guests and embarrassed looks from the parents. However, the gender cliches are changing. A few months ago, a new television commercial for a dishwashing liquid pleasantly surprised viewers by showing a couple that shared dishwashing duties. While Desai thinks that the advertisement is "ahead of reality", he admits that some sense of partnership is creeping in between men and women. "The change is faster in certain areas of work. For example, men have started to buy vegetables but they are not yet ready to chop them," he says. Of course, it is unfair to paint everyone with the same brush. There have been men who have shouldered household chores and many continue to do so. Rohan Joshi, a Mumbai-based stand-up comedian, for instance, says that he likes doing the cleaning and washing at home. "I can't cook so I have a help who cooks for me but I do my own dishes," says Joshi, who intends to continue helping with the chores after he gets married. "It all depends on an individual's mindset," he says.
