Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday appeared before the Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha following his letter to the Speaker about Members of Parliament lobbying for projects in which they have interest or which fall outside their constituencies.

Mr. Ramesh was summoned by the Committe headed by Manik Rao Gavit, after the Minister's letter to Speaker Meira Kumar was referred to it.

Sources privy to the proceedings at the meeting said the members heard the Minister and appreciated his action in bringing the issue to notice.

The Members, the sources said, had asked the Minister to submit documents/letters he received from the MPs. After perusal of the communication, the Committee would take a decision.

The Committee meeting, among others, was attended by T.R. Baalu (Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam), Gurudas Dasgupta (Communist Party of India), Prem Das Rai (Sikkim Democratic Front), Asaduddin Owaisi (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen), Rayapati Sambasiva Rao (Congress).

In December last year, Mr. Ramesh wrote letters to both Ms. Kumar and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari complaining that MPs were approaching him and directly meeting Ministry officials about projects run by companies they own or are associated with, or those in areas outside their own States or constituencies.

He alleged that this put pressure on the Ministry and was not in keeping with the norms for MPs' behaviour. “This is a blatant violation of norms. I have tried to discourage this but have not entirely succeeded,” he said in the letter.

Mr. Ansari too had referred the letter to the Ethics Committee of the House.
