Jaitapur ‘inquiry’ tribunal

Activists opposed to a nuclear power plant in Jaitapur plan to go ahead with an “inquiry” by a people’s tribunal into environment and rights violations by the project even after 14 protesters were arrested for alleged rioting.

The protesters were held over a riot that broke out in December following the death of a local resident after being hit by a police Jeep.

Among those arrested is Milind Desai, a resident of Mithgavane village, who had called the government “shameless” on the issue of compensation being given to villagers during the chief minister’s public meeting with locals on Saturday.

Activists from groups such as the Konkan Bachao Samiti and the Jan Hit Sewa Samiti called the arrests “arbitrary”. They claimed that the move to arrest the protesters, which amounted to “state repression”, was in response to the protests at the chief minister’s meeting.

The tribunal, set up following a request by local residents, is scheduled to meet on March 6-7. The hearing will be conducted by a retired chief justice, a former judge of a high court and experts, including lawyers.

Compensation

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India has finalised a Rs 650-crore rehabilitation package — which is “10 times” more effective than the existing one — for persons displaced by the proposed Jaitapur nuclear plant, reports PTI.
