The foodgrains output for 2009-10 is expected to be 16.27 million tonnes lower at 218.20 million tonnes than the record production of 234.47 million tonnes last year.

The decline, mainly in rice, edible oils and coarse cereals, is due to the widespread drought in the kharif season last year.

Significantly, the government has slightly lowered the expected production of wheat in the fourth advance estimates to 80.71 million tonnes from 80.98 million tonnes projected in the third estimate in May. Still, it will be higher than the record 80.68 million tonnes produced in 2007-08.

Rice output has also been revised downward to 89.13 million tonnes from 89.31 million tonnes. The production in 2008-09 was much higher at 99.18 million tonnes.

Coarse cereals

A significant decline is expected in the production of coarse cereals at 33.77 million tonnes compared to 40.03 million tonnes in 2008-09. The major shortfall will be in maize output. This year too maize sowing is lagging behind.

Pulses output is expected to be 14.59 million tonnes, also lower than the projection of 14.77 million tonnes in May.

It is, however, slightly higher than 14.57 million tonnes produced in 2008-09.

The decline in oilseeds and estimated at 24.93 million tonnes is significant, compared to 27.72 million tonnes produced in 2008-09. The major shortfall is in groundnut, rapeseed and mustard and sunflower output. Groundnut production is expected to be lower by 1.66 million tonnes.

Soyabean output, however, is expected to be higher at 10.05 million tonnes than 9.91 million tonnes achieved the previous year.

Sugarcane output is expected to be lower at 277.75 million tonnes than 285.03 million tonnes produced in 2008-09.

However, cotton and jute output will be higher than in 2008-09.
