Adult education authorities are going to take up a literacy drive to benefit 29,500 illiterate tribals in the Agency areas in both East and West Godavari districts from January. The Central scheme called Sakshara Bharat meant to promote literacy mainly among women in 18 districts is already launc-hed and the three districts of East and West Godavari and Krishna were excluded from the programme as the literacy rate in these districts is above 60 per cent. State government entrusted the task of carrying out a literacy drive to the adult education department for tribals aged between 15 and 50 years of age. Government has given the target to involve 14,750 tribals in each district to make them literate. Adult education authorities with support from the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) will implement the literacy drive. Volunteers who are educated and interested to take part in the literacy drive will be roped in the programme on a 1:10 or 15 ratio. That is, one volunteer for 10 to 15 persons. Two teachers in the school complex will be trained to serve as mandal resource persons, who in turn, will train the volunteers. The mandal resource persons will be trained by key resource pe-rsons from the Visakhap-atnam-based State Resour-ce Centre. The duration of the course is six months covering 200 hours. The au-thorities are also planning to tie up the literacy progr-amme with a training session on various vocations. They are planning to appoint interested secondary grade teachers as supervisors of the programme. In East Godavari, the literacy drive will be taken up in the three mandals of Rampachodavaram and Rajavommangi and part of Gangavaram. Nearly Rs.14.75 lakh was released by state government for implementation of the programme. In West Godavari, the drive will be taken up in the three mandals of Buttaigudem, Pola-varam and Jeelug-umilli, covering nearly 48 gram panchayats.
