JABALPUR: Twenty-year-old Naraini was one among nine prospective brides who were unceremoniously evicted from a government-organised mass marriage function in Betul and made to surrender their gift hampers on Friday after two women officials prodded their belly and announced them pregnant.

As Naraini came out of the venue, the groom followed suit after surrendering the gifts worth Rs 10,000 given under chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's scheme for new couples -'Mukhya Mantri Kanyadan Yojna'.

Nearly 200 tribal couples had gathered at the village ground in Hardu to tie the knot at the much trumpeted function. None of them noticed anything amiss when they were asked to line up at the government primary school for completing procedural formalities. As the boys proceeded to the main pandal after collecting the gift hamper following registration, the girls were taken to a room to be examined by two women officials -Jayashri Budholia and Durga Malviya- for a check-up, said Shankar Singh Korku, a social activist, who was at the venue. "A few of them were given the marching orders after being found pregnant," he said.

"Pregnancy before marriage is not unusual among tribals," fumed Geeta Ramlal Uike, a special invitee as the ruling BJP's MLA from Ghoradungari in Betul district. "In these communities, boys and girls often elope and then decide to formalise their relationship later with no questions asked. So pregnancy does not carry the usual stigma here," she said. In fact it was Uike who brought the exercise to a halt but only after 100 girls had gone through the check-up. The MLA has asked for a probe to fix responsibility.

"It violated the dignity of the tribal women," said Anurag Modi, president of Shramik Adivasi Sangthan. "It boils down to sarkari commission. In the sanctioned Rs 15,000, the usual practice is to give the couples substandard stuff and pocket half the sum."

The opposition Congress sees a political opportunity to put the government on the mat and win over the hearts of the tribals ahead of polls. Calling it an attack on "tribal honour", MPCC president Kantilal Bhuria said he would take it up with the ST Commission. The Congress had earlier called the scheme an 'eyewash', alleging minors and married couples were getting married under official sanction.
