Demanding a CBI inquiry into Saradha Group financial scam, CPI(M) has accused chief minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew of being involved in Ponzi schemes.

"Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee, who is the leader of Trinamool Youth Congress, runs a company which is involved in real estate and micro-finance and has made a huge amount of money in the last two to three years. Its turnover has skyrocketed to 300 crores in a short span of time," alleged the CPI(M) leader and former housing minister, Goutam Deb.

"Abhishek has opened this company. From real estate to everything, the company has many wings. I want to know from Mamata whether Abhishek runs this chit fund or not," Deb added.

Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee also slammed the ruling Trinamool Congress for the Ponzi scheme fiasco that has left a lakh depositors in the lurch.

He also accused the TMC leadership of being ‘hand in glove' with Ponzi scheme companies in the state and alleged that the two have become synonymous.

In the party's defence, Bhattacharjee clarified that the Left Front did everything in its power to curb the activities of chit funds during its tenure.

"During the run up to the 2011 assembly elections, we witnessed an active participation of chit fund companies who campaigned on behalf of the Trinamool Congress. Subsequently, every newspaper and news channel owned by the chit fund companies were encouraged on the condition that they support the Trinamool and oppose the Left Front," Bhattacharjee said while addressing a rally in Panihati in the northern fringes of the city on Sunday.

"In 1992, we shut down 96 companies and arrested more than 100. We appealed to the high court to permit us to seize their properties and return money to the investors. In 1995, the high court accepted our plea, but we could recover only some assets of these chit funds," Bhattacharjee claimed.

The former CM also said that the Left Front government wanted to bring a new law to tackle the Ponzi scheme menace in 2003.

"Former finance minister Asim Dasgupta and other officials went to Delhi 12 times and met senior officials there, including the then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. But we received no reply till 2008," Bhattacharya said.

The bill was sent back to the state asking for some specific clauses to be changed. "Later, we found that some people here did not want the new law to come into force," Bhattacharjee alleged hinting at the Trinamool.
