MUZAFFARPUR (Bihar): The Union government has started dumping MGNREGA by restricting the expenditure on wages and also limiting the area where this central project is being implemented in the country, said RJD national vice-president and former Union minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh here on Sunday, who had launched the project in February 2006 during his tenure as Union minister for rural development in the UPA regime.

Talking to the media, Singh said work under MGNREGA has been closed in Bihar as the Union government has stopped payment of wages to the unemployed and poor families even after working on different schemes. The workers of the state have to be paid Rs 636 crore and the Union government has turned apathetic.

Singh said the BJP government at the Centre has decided to bring down the expenditure on wages under MGNREGA from 60% to merely 51% but has raised the quantum of expenditure on the purchase of materials from 40 to 49%. Moreover, the government has limited the implementation of MGNREGA from 643 districts in the country to only 200 districts, he alleged.

He said over 5 crore unemployed and landless families were getting jobs every year under the scheme which had been once described as 'world's largest financial inclusion'. India is poor only because of unemployment and the government has started dumping employment guarantee scheme on pressure from corporate sector for getting cheap labour.

A new threat of starvation is now looming large over Bihar and, to avoid it, a massive exodus of labour has started again. Poor families, which has retuned from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi after getting work in their own villages, have now started leaving for other states in search of work again.
