An 11-member technical team from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) visited the Lavasa hill station project, 65 km from the city, on Wednesday for a detailed assessment of the Rs 3,000-crore project in Pune district. The team will be in Pune for three days to ready the report on the project.

The construction of the project was held up for want of environmental clearance. The team is conducting the visit on the directives of the Bombay High Court which has asked the ministry to take a final decision on the show-cause notice to the company by January 10.

The court had directed that before taking the decision, a state/Centre level Environment Impact Assessment Committee must visit the site “at least for three days” for inspection. Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had declared that the technical team would do the assessment. The ministry will submit its reply to the high court by January 10 in connection with the petition filed by Lavasa challenging the stay on construction by the ministry.

The team which comprised seven members from the Centre and four from the state is headed by former additional secretary with the Environment Ministry Naresh Dayal. Dayal has headed several assessment committees including the Navi Mumbai airport environmental clearance.

“We have just come today and we will be conducting a detailed assessment of the project after visiting all the sites and hearing out all involved. After we conduct the hearing, we will submit a detailed report,” Dayal said in reply to a query.

The team was also confronted by activist Medha Patkar who has been protesting against various violations of the project for the past three years. Patkar, on hearing that the team was giving independent hearing to villagers for the project, demanded that the team give the villagers of Moogaon a special hearing on Thursday.

“There are several issues of the Adivasi populace who refused to give up their lands for the project. We are not against development but we are definitely against illegal constructions and encroachments especially over water bodies,”said Patkar who came in the afternoon with her team. She was assured that the hearing would be given on Thursday.
